[A strange, weightless sensation coursed through the doctor's body...or what was left of it. An undulating light glowed just past his closed eyelids, like the bright refraction at the bottom of a swimming pool.]
Huh. Maybe that two-bit Kisuke landed me six feet under.
...
Kisuke...
In the apartment!
Celty!
[His breath caught in his throat as he jerked up in a panic, clutching his aching chest. The searing pain across his left lung quickly shattered any hopes for a heroic, untimely demise as he sucked in a rattling breath.] Nope. Still very, very, painfully alive.
[He rolled onto his side, checking to see if any of his ribs were cracked. No breaks were discovered, but the soaked lapel of his lab coat hit the ground by his arm with a wet plop.] The...hell?
Maybe that psychopath and his thugs tried to drown me...I'd think Celty covered me in her anguished sobs, but she doesn't appear to have discernible tear ducts, so that's out...
[Which raised the question of Celty's whereabouts. He had to warn her, to keep her from going back to the apartment...but he doubted he was even in Ikebukuro anymore, and his sense of dismay grew as the dullahan was nowhere to be found.
His worn brain finally began processing his surroundings as he craned his neck up, his jaw sliding down in shock. The source of the waves of light was water, in every direction. He threw an arm out in front of him, half-expecting to meet the steady tension of cool seawater against his limb.
But no...he wasn't drowning...He shook the water droplets off his fingertips and pressed them to the light vein on his wrist, feeling his pulse in time with his rapidly beating heart . Nope, not dead. Maybe he was in some sort of medically induced coma...this could all be an illusion out of his subconscious...
That would certainly explain the massive coral arching above him. He'd chanced upon a few articles about some large coral phyla off the coast of Japan, but this was just ungodly. Once he tended to his chest, maybe he'd snip off a sample to test...he was no biologist, but he had a feeling there was definitely something worth checking about that thing - if it was real.
He tried to stand and stumbled forward, his blood rushing from his head with a dizzying lurch.] That wouldn't happen to me in a coma...so this is real.
[He turned his stiff neck from side to side, desperately trying to find someone to explain what in the lord's name was happening to him.]
How...why...?
Where the hell am I?!
